  AN IMPORTANT 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN FOLK ART WHIRLIGIGThe fine and rare mid 19th century example of carved and painted pine depicts a gentleman in black top hat and tail coat with mustard colored waistcoat above brownish red trousers. The figure, though primitive, is very well carved in good, folk proportions and retains an outstanding dry old surface. The hands, holding flat blades, are nicely executed as simple depictions of thick 'fingers.' The arms are mounted through with primitive forged iron apparatus and crude rivets, One leg is slightly bent at the knee and the heel raised as the figure leans slightly forward and his tails appear to billow a bit. The carving is currently mounted to an old sheet metal vane. This is an outstanding example with all the desirable traits of a notable folk art object.Floor standing museum display included.Measures 28.5 x 17.5 x 6 inches.Very good condition as shown, free from actual damage beyond the effects of age and exposure to the elements, no repair or replacement.Provenance: Private Collection Denver, Colorado.
